These are the Saint Joseph pastries I got from our neighborhood bakery ‐ called Cuccio's Bakery. It's been there since 1937. Anita wanted to add some info. The pastry on the left is the Zeppole. It's native to Naples and we like it best because our families come from the little towns around Naples. The Zeppole always has a cherry on it, usually an Amarena cherry, which is bitter tasting and comes from the area of Bologna and Modena. The cream inside is like a thick pudding. The bitter cherry represents the Lenten season and the sweetness the coming of Easter. The Sfinge is from Sicily. The slice of bitter orange skin is like the cherry on the Zeppole, a reminder of Lent. The cream inside is Sicilian Cassata cream. It is thick and super sweet. Going to the bakery these days induces a bad case of sticker shock. I'm sure you’ve heard about the big problem we have in the US with bird flu. There's a serious egg shortage. In my local grocery, eggs are usually about $6.99 a dozen. Last week they were $14.99 a dozen. Since bakeries use so many eggs, prices have skyrocketed. These pastries were $5.00 each. Daddy frequently makes Lasagne from a great Italian recipe. Here are the ingredients. Woo hoo.
