He owned property in the ‘Sutte’6 of Bamberg, quite near to my grandparents. My father, whose grandfather he was, spent a lot of time with his grandparents.
Peter Tritt’s life was greatly influenced by the events of his young and middle years and he was full of stories about his travels, the Napoleonic wars, the mighty armies marching across Europe, finding quarters for the soldiers and many other troubles through two wars. He used to drill my father according to eighteenth century rules, making him march, turn about and stand with his legs apart.
This great grandfather Peter Tritt I remember well from early childhood, writes Lorenz von Seidlein. He was then an old, old man, still comparatively fit for his great age, but very short sighted. When he came to us, he used to wear an old fashioned, wide coat with pleated skirts and large side pockets, I was allowed to reach down into these and take out what he had brought me. He had money in the bank, which in his old age caused him great misgivings. After his death, 600 Thalers were found hidden in his bed.7 He died in 1862 aged 86.
