'Through the green you could see the Bamberg town hall, situated opposite us with the then quite new, colourful frescoes by Anwander..'
The frescoes with illusory architecture on the outside walls are highly impressive. They were the work of Johann Anwander from Lauingen. Painted figures of Roman consuls and senators stand in the niches framed by pairs of (painted) pillars. Between the second, fourth, sixth and eighth window, on the east side, allegories of the four Ages of Man are to be seen, on the west side the four Elements. The Bishop’s rule is glorified in the middle of the east side, the new Prince Bishop Franz Konrad von Stadion is greeted with fanfares. Further down the wall, Anwander has immortalized himself with the attributes of his art. On the left the Virtues of the Burghers are portrayed between the first pillars and the first window. One can recognize Prudence with the keys in her hand and Abundance with the overflowing cornucopia. The third figure, between the last pair of pillars, Temperance treads on vice. In the middle axis of the west side the mourning for the deceased Prince Bishop Johann Philipp von Frankenstein is depicted. Next, between the windows, come the Virtues of the Sovereign: Justice with the scales and Fortitude with the lion. The original painting stayed in good condition until the last third of the 19th century. When cracks appeared in the plaster during building work, the frescoes faded quickly. The results of the restoration of 1899-1902 did not last long. In 1960 Anton Greiner began reconstructing the frescoes and gave them their present appearance.
